I like Naruto, and I also like Japanese myth. Perhaps romanticism fancies me? I've been curious about it's tailed demons. I think I found the answer. The number lists their amount of tails.
1:(One Tail): Shukaku (Tanuki/Racoon Dog)
2: Seiryuu (Dragon)
3: One kind of similar mouse! Has a tail! But carries on the back two (What the f***?). Behind actually does not have the tail..O-o;;; (This is a weird one)
4: A little clear color red bird! The suspicion is Suzaku! (A Ho-oh/Phoinex)
5: Likely tiger. But is not the white (Byakko). Really 5 Tails!
6: Shark.. Really. The ultra terror has 6 tails and 3 heads!
7: Genbu. Firmly said. The Carapace opened 7 holes all to have tails (Genbu/Xuan Wu is a tortosie)
8: Likely monkey...(I wouldn't be surprised)
9: Kyuubi (Fox)
Possible Differences:
Two Tails: Nekomata (A magic cat that can control the dead)
Oh yeh, here's something I found:

Since ravemax‚³‚ñ brought up the Nine-tail thing, here’s the famous Nine-tail fox story.
Nine-tail fox is a monster that was actually written in several stories in China, Korea and Japan. I don’t know what’s said in Chinese/Korean culture, but in Japan story is something like following:
11th Century B.C., there was a very beautiful empress in China. She was very much loved by the emperor and got all the power she wanted. But she was very evil and inhuman deeds and destroying the country by killing innocent people etc. She was killed by a courageous guy who wanted to save the country from this massacre-like deed of this empress.
She was said to be a Nine-tail fox that lived more than 1000 years. After being killed in China, it reappeared in India over 700 years later as another beautiful lady. She was, again, loved so much by the Price there and used the power to do inhuman things.
One day, the Prince saw a fox sleeping his yard so he shot an arrow to it. From the next day, the Princess started to complain about headaches. A doctor who saw her told the Prince that she isn’t a human but a monster. Prince tried to capture her but she ran away.
Long years past, there was another most beautiful lady appeared in royal court in China. She, though, didn’t smile, so a King wanted her to smile. He did things to make her smile and people in the country didn’t believe in the King anymore. At the end, both the King and the lady were killed by enemies.
After 1000 years later, now this nine-tail fox came over to japan. It was again a very beautiful lady, who was loved by an emperor. As much love he pour into her, the emperor was getting more sick every day. A doctor told him that the cause of his illness is the princess and she’s a monster. She was eventually shot by arrows to death in Japan and became a stone that release deadly poison.
I just found a site that tells this story better, go to Timbberfolf.org to read about it in perfect English!
Anyway, this type of fox is born with one tail. As they grew older and learns magical power, they tail branch off to two, three, and so on. When they reaches 1000 years old, they will have nine tails and will have god-like magic power.

Just because I saw the Kanji g‘åŽÖh (orochi) in the episode 67, Ifm writing about Orochimaru. For those who havenft watch it yet, youfll see it even without looking for it (unless you look away for a few seconds).
His name in Kanji ‘åŽÖ literally says Big Snake. Maru part is to make it sound more like a name (I talked about Maru when posted about Shikamaru). This kanji also be pronounced as Daija. Daija is more often used when saying a big snake in real life. So, itfs natural for him to summon snakes... no brainer.
First time I heard his name, I thought about ”ªŠò‘åŽÖ(Yamata-no-Orochi). Yamata-no-Orochi is a big snake (or rather a dragon) with eight heads. The Yamata in Kanji means eight branches. This snake appears in “ú–{_˜b (Nihon Shinwa, Japanese mythology), which contains several stories about the creation of Japan, and about Gods who created and lived in Japan. The most famous God in Nihon Shinwa is “VÆ‘å_ (Amaterasu-Oomikami, the Sun Goddess).
Anyway, the story about Yamata-no-Orochi in short is about ‘fœûšj‘¸ (Susanoono-Mikoto) who was a little brother of Amaterasu. He was such a bad boy and did lots of bad things in ‚“VŒ´ (Takamagahara, like Gods' place, heaven). So he was heavily punished and banished there. On the way from there, he met old couple and their daughter, Šïˆî“c•P (Kushiinada-Hime), who were crying because their eight daughters have been taken by the evil snake one by one every year, and finally this year their last daughter will be taken. Susano-ono-mikoto made a promise to kill the snake for them, in return to get their daughter as his wife. He made the old couple prepare Žð (Sake) and made the Yamata-no-orochi drank. After it got drunk, he fought with it and finally killed it. While he was cutting its tail, he found a sword inside. It is called a ‘“ã‚ÌŒ• (Kusanagi-no-Tsurugi). This sword was presented to his sister, Amaterasu-Oomikami, and has been one of ŽOŽí‚Ì_Ší (Sanshu-no-Jingi). They are like a gift/protector from Amaterasu-Oomikami, and now Imperial family owns them. By the way, the original name of this sord was different, but now is known as Kuasangino-Tsurugi after ˜`Œš–½ (Yamato-Takeru-no-mikoto) used it.
